When time stands still

26 June 2015

Time stopped when the legato of Sébastien Surel’s violin met the radiant playing of the pianist Abdel Rahman el Bacha. The notes of music flew away towards the hills as dusk closed in and this complicit duo produced a pure, highly sensitive performance. Sonatas by Mozart and Fauré were brought to life beneath their virtuosic fingers. The audience, including numerous Grandes Heures de Saint-Emilion regulars, seemed bewitched by this music, a universal language which speaks to the spirit and the heart.
The sound energy, intimacy of the venue and artists’ generosity (Abdel Rahman El Bacha played some extracts from Ravel’s ‘Miroir’ as a prelude as well as one of his own compositions) made the moment truly magical. At the end of the recital the audience gravitated towards the château’s little lantern-lit square courtyard, where the unique evening continued with a tasting of wines from our cellars.
